Making an Instagram carousel is two jobs. Assembling takes five minutes: tap + → Post → select up to 20 photos or videos → order them → share. "How do I make a carousel on Instagram" hides two different questions, and most tutorials only answer the easy one.
The first half is assembling: getting multiple images into one swipeable post. That's an app mechanic — five minutes, covered below, done.
The second half is designing: producing slides that people actually swipe through instead of scrolling past. That's the part that decides whether the format pays off — and it pays off measurably:
Carousels also get a mechanic no other format has: if someone sees your post but doesn't finish swiping, Instagram can re-serve it later starting from the next slide. A second impression, free. But only well-designed slides earn the swipes that trigger it.

Half one: assembling the post in the Instagram app
If your images are ready, this is the whole flow. (The mechanics are the same as posting any multi-image carousel — here's the short version.)
1. Tap + and select your slides
Tap + → Post, then tap the multi-select icon (stacked squares) above your gallery. Select up to 20 photos and videos in the order you want them to appear. Numbers appear on each thumbnail as you tap.
2. Set the aspect ratio before anything else
The first slide locks the crop for the entire post — every other slide gets cropped to match it. If your slides are mixed shapes, either crop them to one ratio before uploading or use Instagram's Mixed option, which keeps each item's own ratio (within 4:5 to 1.91:1) and pads the difference with borders. 3. Check the order
Tap Next and swipe through the preview. Order is narrative: slide 1 is the promise, the middle is the delivery, the last slide is the ask. Long-press and drag thumbnails to reorder if something's off.
4. Edit, caption, share
Per-slide filters and edits work like single posts. Write the caption, tag, add location, hit Share.

Half two: designing slides worth swiping
Get the dimensions right first
4:5 portrait wins because it occupies the most feed on a phone. Whichever you choose, design every slide at the same pixel dimensions — the crop lock makes inconsistency visible immediately. Sizes, ratios, and edge cases get the full treatment in our Instagram carousel size guide.
One trap worth knowing up front: the profile grid previews posts at 3:4, trimming roughly 6% of a 4:5 post's total width (~3% per side). Keep text and faces away from the vertical edges of slide 1 or your grid will clip them.
Structure the slides as an arc
A carousel is an argument delivered in swipes, and each slide has one job:
- Slide 1 — the hook. A specific claim, number, or question that makes not swiping feel like a loss. "5 tips for better posts" is wallpaper; "Your carousel dies on slide 2 — here's why" is a hook.
- Middle slides — one idea each. One claim, one stat, or one step per slide. The moment a slide needs two paragraphs, it's two slides.
- Last slide — the CTA. Save, share, comment, follow, or click. Pick one and say it plainly.
Pick your tool
Two honest routes:
- Manual design — Canva, Figma, Keynote, anything with an artboard. Set it to 1080×1350, build slide 1, duplicate it for every other slide so fonts and spacing stay locked, export PNGs. Full control; slowest path; consistency is on you.

Making a carousel from content you already have

Manually, the compression is the work: pull out the core argument, cut it to 6–10 claims, give each claim a slide, write a hook that sells the payoff. Budget 30–60 minutes per piece.

- Mixed dimensions. One 1080×1080 slide in a 4:5 set gets cropped or border-padded. Export everything at identical pixel dimensions.
- Style drift. Slide 1 is crisp; by slide 7 the font size wandered and the accent color shifted. Duplicate one master slide instead of designing each fresh.
- Text at the edges. Feed UI overlays the bottom of the image, and the grid's 3:4 preview trims the sides. Keep text well inside the canvas.
- A label instead of a hook. If slide 1 just names the topic, the swipe never starts — and none of the other slides exist.
Skip the manual work
The honest accounting: assembly is five minutes, but designing 8–10 slides that hold a ratio, a hierarchy, and a hook is 1–2 hours the first time — and that cost repeats every post.
